The purpose of the arts education portion of this course is to assist students in the design of education programs for arts organizations. The arts education portion requires:

Program design criteria: each student is to develop a one page document listing his/her own criteria for a quality arts education program, and present their criteria to the class

Site visit report - students are required to make a single visit to an arts education program, type up a one page report on their observations, and present their report to the class by the fifth arts ed session (March 24th)

Review of an educational print document. Each student is to identify and bring to class a print document from an arts education program. Each student will write a one page critique of the document and present the critique in class

Strategic plan: each student is to generate a one page planning document of key goals and strategies for an arts education program

Website plan: each student is to create the outline for a website for an arts education program
Evaluation plan: each student is to create and present an evaluation plan

No more than one unexcused absence will be acceptable for completing the course. Active participation in class discussion is required.

Feb 3: 1st arts ed session: UNDERSTANDING YOUR ORGANIZATION'S MISSION: discuss criteria for arts education programming
homework: read ARTS EDUCATION AS A CATALYST TO REFORM, identify arts ed program you will visit and set date for visit, write your own criteria

Feb 10: 2nd arts ed session: ANALYZING YOUR ORGANIZATION'S FUNCTIONS: present your criteria, report back site visit date and location, discuss the multiple roles of arts education programming
homework: read WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA WRITING PROJECT STRATEGIC PLAN,
write your own strategic plan, site visits

March 3: 3RD arts ed session: ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGIC PLANNING: present strategic plans, site visit presentations
homework: read SPEECH TO GRANTMAKERS IN THE ARTS and AN ARTS EDUCATION FUTURE IN TWO WORLDS, site visits

March 17: 4th arts ed session: DEALING WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS: PARTNERSHIP MODELS: presentation and discussion on partnership models, issues of post-modernism and arts education, site visit presentations
homework: site visits, prepare print document presentation

March 24: 5th arts ed session: REPRESENTING YOUR ORGANIZATION IN PRINT: present site visit reports and reviews of educational print documents.
homework: prepare outline of website

April 7: 6th arts ed session: REPRESENTING YOUR ORGANIZATION ON THE WEB: present web design outlines
home work: read INTERSECTIONS WORK KIT, design and write evaluation plans

April 28: 7TH arts ed session: EVALUATING YOUR ORGANIZATION: present evaluation plans
